Tacklbox Heads to the Field: Partnering with UGA for Fisheries Research

By Logan Parrott

Recently, the Tacklbox team traveled to Lake Oconee in Georgia to meet with Dr. Bringolf from the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources for a day of fisheries research and cold-water fishing analysis.

Temperatures throughout the trip stayed in the upper 20s, creating ideal conditions to study fish behavior during winter patterns. Using Dr. Bringolf’s boat and live sonar equipment, we located schools of baitfish, identified structure, and tracked fish movement in deeper water throughout the lake.

One of the main focuses of the trip was testing ice fishing tactics in Georgia waters. By using small vertical jigs and downsized presentations typically associated with ice fishing, we were able to consistently catch multiple species throughout the day.

The techniques proved extremely effective. Over the course of the trip, we caught large numbers of white bass, largemouth bass, striped bass, and channel catfish. The sonar technology allowed us to monitor fish positioning and observe how fish reacted to lure presentation in real time.

In addition to the fishing success, the trip provided valuable insight into cold-water fish behavior. We learned how fish group together during lower temperatures, how they position around structure and bait schools, and how subtle lure movements can trigger bites in winter conditions.

Working alongside Dr. Bringolf also gave us a firsthand look at the level of research and knowledge being developed through UGA’s fisheries programs. His understanding of fisheries science, conservation, and fish behavior made the experience extremely valuable for our team.

This trip was an important first step in Tacklbox's partnership with UGA, and we look forward to continuing future research, conservation efforts, and on-the-water projects together.
