How Tacklbox identifies your catch using AI
By Harvey Li

Every time you hold up a fish and wonder what exactly is that?, you're doing the same thing our AI is doing — pattern matching against everything you've ever seen. The difference is that Tacklbox has been trained on hundreds of thousands of labeled fish images, so it can do in a fraction of a second what might take you ten minutes of flipping through a field guide.
What happens when you tap the scanner
When you open Tacklbox and tap Identify, the app captures a frame and runs it through our computer vision pipeline. The model doesn't just look at color — it reads shape, fin position, scale pattern, lateral line, and body proportions simultaneously. Each of those signals gets weighted and combined into a ranked list of candidate species.
The result is a confidence score per species, reflecting how closely the visual signature matches our training database. You see the top match first, with alternatives shown below.
Why fish identification is actually hard
Unlike identifying a dog or a car, fish present some specific challenges:
- Wet vs. dry: a bass looks very different fresh from the water versus sun-dried on a dock
- Lighting: underwater shots, harsh midday glare, and shaded canopy all shift the apparent color
- Juvenile vs. adult: many species change markedly as they grow
- Regional variation: the same species can look different across geographic populations
We trained heavily on all of these variants, and we supplement the image model with location context — if you're fishing in Lake Lanier in July, that narrows the probability space considerably.
What you get after identification
Once a species is confirmed, Tacklbox pulls a full knowledge card:
- Rarity tier — Common, Uncommon, Rare, or Legendary, based on catch frequency in your region
- Average length and weight for that species in your area
- Best baits — ranked by effectiveness for that species' feeding patterns
- Habitat and timing notes — where it likes to hold and when it's most active
- Log to your fish tank — one tap to add the catch to your personal aquarium
The goal is to turn every unrecognized catch into a learning moment. Tight lines. 🎣
