Rarity tiers: why every catch feels like a drop
By The Tacklbox Team

Not all fish are created equal. A 3-pound Bluegill is a great catch — but it doesn't carry the same weight as a 40-pound Flathead Catfish or a river-caught Muskie. Tacklbox's rarity tier system makes that difference tangible every time you log a catch.
The four tiers
Every species in the Tacklbox database is assigned a rarity tier based on how frequently it appears in verified catch logs for a given region:
| Tier | Color | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Common | Bronze | Frequently caught — the reliable staples of your water |
| Uncommon | Steel blue | Present but not guaranteed — you have to work for it |
| Rare | Cyan | Infrequent in the region — a story worth telling |
| Legendary | Gold | Exceptional — species that most anglers never land |
The tiers aren't fixed globally. A Largemouth Bass is Common in Georgia and Florida, but might be Uncommon in colder northern states where the population thins out. The system adapts to where you're fishing.
What makes something Legendary?
Legendary catches tend to share a few traits:
- Low regional catch frequency — less than roughly 2% of logged catches in the area
- Biological scarcity — long-lived, slow-reproducing species that are inherently rare
- Size threshold — some species unlock Legendary status only at trophy size
Examples of Legendary catches across the US:
- Muskie in the Midwest — the fish of ten thousand casts
- Blue Catfish over 50 lb in the Southeast — a genuine trophy
- Alligator Gar in Texas and the Gulf states — ancient and massive
- Tiger Trout anywhere — a rare natural hybrid of Brown and Brook Trout
Why it matters
The rarity system does two things. First, it makes every catch log genuinely meaningful — you're not just checking a box, you're placing a species in context. Second, it makes your fish tank visually rich: a Legendary catch shows up in your aquarium with its gold badge, distinct from the Common and Uncommon fish swimming alongside it.
Catching a Legendary isn't luck. It's the result of the right spot, the right time, and the right setup — exactly what Tacklbox is designed to help you find.
